Sometimes we have data that we want to compare across two dimensions. But crosstab or normal excel sheets are not good to see trends. However heat map is great for this situaton. Heat maps are great way to compare categorical data using color and size. In this article we will learn how to build a heat map.

To build a heat map, you will need one or more dimensions, and two measures. We will be building a heat map that shows both sales and profit by region and segment. In this practice we will use sample store data set you can download with click here.

We will drag profit to color and sales on size. Size and color both effective ways to show information visually. Lets look what will be happen:

Next we will divide the measures categorically whic we want. By dragging segment and sub category to rows and region to columns. Here, our heat map is visually ready.

Let’s Learn How to Provide an Insight From Heat Map

Your eye is quickly drown to those hot spots in the chart. Heat maps can encode two measures at the same time. With higlighting outliers with size and color. Once the heat map is built, we can make several adjustments. To improve the readability of the viz. Let’s look these adjustments step by step.

First of all, we cannot see every segment in one view. So we should ad filter to shorter the size. Add segmen to filter card. Like the below :

Click to apply and choose the show filter. And then Right click the filter menu which is occured in the right and select the single value list. Lastly increse the size standart to entire view.

This view is better. You can look to segment and suc category divided by profit and sales. This is why heat maps are very useful for your data analytics. You can select the segment from the filter . For example if you select the Home office segment you will be see each sub category with home office.

Our heat map is ready but if you want to, you can format the pane or you can change the color and size. The color in this viz is okay but i will change the size a bit big. Let’s look how its look like :

Heat map is completed. This looks awesome right ? When you hover over a hotspot you can see that region, segment, sub category, proift and sales numbers. This is great for analytics.
